Whale Shark Research Field Study

What initially began as a scientific expedition in 2006, the MWSRP has grown to become the only long-term organization dedicated to study the iconic, yet vulnerable whale shark species in the Maldives.

Our goal is simple: we seek to advance the field of whale shark knowledge and to advocate for sound conservation policy in the Maldives. By encouraging and valuing community and industry stakeholder participation, we are able to leverage the scientific research to safeguard the rich biodiversity and fragile marine ecosystems that are the basis for not only whale sharks, but also life, livelihood and culture in the Maldives.

Service learning trips run by the passionate and experienced joint staff of Peninsula Outdoor School and MWSRP is a unique way to learn about the natural world, experience Maldivian island culture, and participate in marine research and environmental stewardship projects.  Students will be instructed on shark biodiversity, conservation issues, sustainable tourism, and taught in field methods for data collection.  The data collected during the whale shark program is utilized in defining marine protected areas, assists in further whale shark studies by providing support for doctoral research grants, and enables accuracy in determining whale shark growth and movement in the Indian Ocean.

We have been conducting service learning trips since 2014 and have a proven track record for providing safe, educational, and exciting trips for students and volunteers alike.
